Yesterday I learned that this particular car took second overall at LeMans in 1974. Beating several prototypes including one of the Matra 670Cs and the Gulf GR7. It finished 6 laps down to the leading Matra 670C, but that’s pretty respectable considering this is a full bodied car.
The t urbocharged 2.1 liter flat-6 made somewhere around 500 horsepower in a car that only weighed 1800 lbs.
It also featured approximately all the rear wing.
I also love the NACA duct replacing the rear side windows.

I once saw it’s sister car(I think) in person in the Porsche Museum, t ruly an amazing car! Also, don’t let it’s 911-like looks fool you, as it is closer to a prototype than first impressions make it seem (still far removed from a Matra 670 though)

I’m a little sad it wasn’t there when I visited, but they had all the 917s around so I really can’t complain.

RSR 2.1 Turbo was still using 5-speed transmission like the other 911 s. The certain c ar that managed to take the second position did reach the finish line with broken fifth gear. It would have likely won the race without its transmission problems. The race winning Matra had its own transmission problems that helped RSR. Matra was also using Porsche transmissions but in their case the lower gears started having issues. Maybe this was the point when Porche decided to use stronger 4-speed transmission in all turbocharged 911 related cars (up to 1989).
5 years later RSR’s sibling managed to beat all competition and won the whole ‘79 Le Mans race. Rear wing is smaller but the rest of the cars is more advanced in many ways. It was followed by a bunch of 935 and a 934. The best prototype was 5th. Technical difficulties and very wet weather helped lesser classes to beat the top one.

the best year ... (1974)
It’s a wing on wheels, for sure.
